Note 02

Choosing needle depth: a practical reference

2026-09-16 5 min read Hipdeer Technology Limited

Depth is the first parameter an operator sets on a microneedling device. This note is about the equipment rather than the protocol: the ranges each device family supports, what the probe formats mean, and how consumables are specified and purchased.

01 · Two device families, two depth ranges

The two families we supply are specified differently. Mixing them up is the most common source of confusion in an enquiry, so it is worth separating them.

Device familyDepth rangeProbe / cartridge formats
RF microneedling platform0.5 – 7 mm12P / 24P / 40P probes and nano crystal head
Microneedling pen0.2 – 2.5 mm16-pin / 24-pin / 32-pin cartridges and nano chip

Both ranges are adjustable on the device. The figure is the span the platform can be set to, not a recommendation for a particular area.

02 · What the format actually changes

The number in a probe name is its pin count — the number of entry points the head presents in a single pass. A 40P head carries more pins than a 12P head, so the density across the same area differs. The nano formats use a different tip construction again.

Pin count and depth are independent settings: the depth is chosen on the device, and the pin count is chosen by which probe you load.

03 · Where depth is set

On the RF platforms, depth is set from the touchscreen and the machine holds parameter presets, so a clinic can return to the same configuration on the next occasion. On the pen, depth is set on the adjustment dial and the speed is set separately, up to 9,700 rpm.

04 · Consumables

Probes and cartridges are listed as single-use items, and are available for separate purchase. Two practical consequences for a buyer:

  • Plan consumable volume at the same time as the machine — it is the recurring line in the budget, not the one-off
  • Ask for the consumable price list together with the unit price, and confirm how cartridges are packed for shipping

Single-use heads are the standard way to control cross-contamination between clients. If a supplier offers reusable heads, make that a question to resolve before purchase rather than after.

05 · What to ask a supplier

  1. What depth range does the specific model support, and over what increment?
  2. Which probe or cartridge formats does it accept?
  3. Are the heads single-use or reusable?
  4. Can the heads be re-ordered, and from where?
  5. What are the consumable dimensions and packing, for freight planning?
  6. Is there a parameter preset function, so settings can be repeated?
Professional useThis note describes equipment specification, not a clinical protocol. Devices are for use by trained professionals only, and the depth appropriate to any given application is a clinical decision for the operator.
